I work in a large firm that doesn't allow business casual. Can I pull off wearing a 3 pc suit without damaging perceptions of myself? Someone whose fashion sense i respect told me a few years ago that nobody under 50 has any business wearing a suit vest. Agree? Disagree? The 'clothier' said he sells lots of them. The thing is, I want to look my age, not fusty. Joe Black (Meet Joe Black) looked suave in his. A guy in the NSA in Enemy of the State looked great in his. But I don't live in a movie. If I can wear one, is there a 'younger' cut to ask for (I'm thinking of ordering a semi-custom Hart-SM)? "RE: 3 Piece suits on a 30-something" I too am a lawyer but a bit older at 54. I wore suits in my 30's and you should be glad your firm requires them. Actually, I feel more comfortable in a suit. My height is 5'7" on a good day and suits give provide the advantage of making me appear slimmer and taller. You will find that clients respect the fact you wear a suit. As far as the vest, is this a pre-requisite in your firm? At your age, you should wear a more progressive style than the standard center vented suit. Perhaps no vent or pocket flaps would be more in line with your image without compromising the firm's culture. Three button suits are a bit more contemporary than the traditional two button. "RE: 3 Piece suits on a 30-something" Except for the "renegade" attorneys, your frim is quite correct in requiring you to wear a suit; the clients will automatically trust in you a bit more, and your peers and co-workers will subconsciously perceive you as professional. As to the vest... Yes, it has made a slight comeback, and I'm sure there are plenty of suave 20- and 30-somethings who'll tell you that a vest is a wonderful addition to their wardrobe. The truth is that the 3-piece suit has been out of style for some years now and will likely never make a comeback. Forget the vest. Instead, concentrate on well-tailored and conservative suits. If you're still in a budget crunch, as many young lawyers seem to be, then find an off-the-rack suit and have it tailored to fit your shoulders and waist. Often times, department stores will do this free of charge for you on suits they sell at full-price. For just a little more money you should be able to find semi-custom suits of a better cut that can look like they were truly made for you after one or two fittings. As the previous poster points out, a 3 button suit is a bit more contemporary than the 2 button models, and seems in no danger of going out of style anytime soon. Whatever you decide, don't forget highly polished black shoes, a starched dress shirt, conservative tie, and nice but understated jewelry. Remember, dress for the job you want, not the job you have! "RE: 3 Piece suits on a 30-something" Thanks guys, helpful advice for a new lawyer born and raised in jeans. actually, all of my current collection of suits are 3-button. To my eyes, the low V of a 2-button seems very '80s. Maybe my tastes will temper. My question though is meant to be "vest or no vest" rather than suit advice in general. I have gotten wind of the slight comeback of the vest that JLMwrite mentions, but hope time proves him wrong about them never really coming back. That said, a lawyer's got to be cautious of dressing too eccentrically, so if it's true that they're gone, i don't want to wear one. Any other comments about the comeback of the vest? It'll cycle in and out of fashion, and it'll always be a "correct" element of style. But it will never be considered a standard part of a man's wardrobe again. "RE: 3 Piece suits on a 30-something" Kylawyer, I'll be willing to bet that you're getting to get a 50/50 response on this one. Half will say "go ahead if you want to", half will say that it's too flashy. For the record, I belong to the latter school of thought. To me, vests are for show offs. And if you are asking yourself whether it's too eccentric to wear a 3-piece suit, I can only advise you to follow your instinct and not wear one. "RE: 3 Piece suits on a 30-something" There is absoloutely nothing wrong with a 30-something professional wearing a three-piece suit. As long as you wear it with a conservative shirt and tie, you won't look too dandy-also be sure to avoid any affectations such as a collar bar or a puffy pocket square; that also takes it a bit over the top. Any man wearing a well tailored/ cut vested suit would be hard-pressed to go through his day without recieiving a compliment about his appearance, three-piece suits truly make an impression. I live in New York City and see quite a few young professionals wearing them; I also see many European businessmen in them as well...if you watch international newscasts, you will see many Brittish and German reporters in them. I always say that if a guy only has one suit, it should be a three-piece (obviously that isn't the case with you) because it gives a lot of flexibility...you can use the two-piece for an interview at a casual firm and then dress it up with the vest for an elegant wedding. So, I say invest in a vest! It's a great weapon for your Suit Arsenal! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top Manton (85 posts) 01-May-04, 09:39 AM (EST) 7. "RE: 3 Piece suits on a 30-something" I am 34, and I wear 3-piece suits all the time, in a very conservative, unforgiving environment. So far as I know, it has never caused me any professional harm.
